Tip of the Day: Leftover Wine from a Party?

In Tips on February 24, 2011 at 11:21 am

No one likes to waste a good bottle of wine.  But after a party you often end up with a half bottle or two.  Instead of leaving it on your counter with the cork in it, turn it into something wonderful.

Dump the wine into a saucepan and simmer over medium-low heat until it has reduced by 3/4.  This should cook out most of the alcohol leaving a rich wine flavor.  Cool the liquid and pour into an ice-cube tray.  Freeze.

Use the cubes to intensify flavor in sauces and soups.  Or for a savory treat, reheat in a saucepan, add some sugar and a vanilla bean and serve over vanilla ice cream.  The possibilities are endless!

Tip of the Day: Fruit Infused Water Centerpieces

In Tips on February 15, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Fruit infused water not only looks beautiful, tastes wonderful but is so easy to do.  Gather a variety of different carafes and bottles, you can pull from what you have or check out flea markets and antique stores.  Add raspberries, cucumbers, lemongrass, limes, mint leaves, you name it, to each vessel and add water.  Let the infusion sit for an hour or so.  Before guests arrive add ice and place the collection of fruit infused waters in the center of your table along with some whole fruit.  This creates a beautiful, functional, and inexpensive centerpiece.

Tip of the Day: Set the Night to Music

In Tips on February 7, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Music sets the mood and tone for every good party.  I recommend creating a few iTunes playlists for the evening.  But if you feel like your music library might be lacking, don’t purchase new music for the occasion. Ask your guests to bring their iPods and rotate them through the night.  It’s a great money and space saving alternative to a DJ!

Tip of the Day: Create More Space

Not enough sofa space for all your guests?  Purchase large throw pillows and some cozy blankets then scatter them around your living room before party time.  It’s an easy way to make everyone comfortable and when the party is over throw the pillows on the sofa for some added color.  This is great for a Super Bowl party or Oscar party where people are likely going to be seated for a long period of time.

Tip of the Day: Instant Buffet

In Tips on January 24, 2011 at 6:28 pm

Having a bash but no room for a buffet? Try using sheet pans and place them face down on top of your stove.  You instantly gain counter space and a great place to keep your dishes warm while your guests enjoy.

Tip of the Day: Place Cards

In Tips on January 13, 2011 at 10:12 am

Place cards aren’t just for weddings. Try using them at your next dinner party.  This can be a fun way to help your friends get to know each other better.  Don’t seat couples next to each other and let the conversation flow!
